More Information on Time Sensitivity of School Funding Issue

Last night’s meeting focused on the tax and funding implications that passage of legislation like SB 76 could have on education funding in the state. Although SB 76 was voted down (by a single vote) in the prior legislative session, in a memorandum dated January 5, 2017, eight senators indicated their intent to re-introduce the legislation in the 2017-2018 regular session as the “Property Tax Independence Act.” The memorandum states, “This legislation will be similar to Senate Bill 76 of 2015.” Business associations and educational associations have issued statements strongly opposing the “unintended but very real and damaging consequences” this act would have on education.

Please see the attached copies of the memorandum and association letters.
