The first District Forum meeting of the school year was held on Tuesday, September 13, 2016, with nearly 100 people in attendance.
Dr. Gene Freeman, Superintendent, presented his vision for the school district and how the District is using benchmarking and assessments to evaluate how each student is progressing. Freeman presented data showing gains in student achievement, even when one looks beyond FCASD’s overall high scores to ensure that we are growing each student every year.
He discussed strategies using newly implemented benchmarking tools, such as STAR 360, that have contributed to these gains while reducing the amount of classroom time spent on the benchmarking. Assistant Superintendent Dave McCommons provided a handout with detailed information on the different assessment that students are exposed to and their purpose, applicable grades, and dates. Megan Cicconi, Director of Instructional and Innovative Leadership, talked about trends in public education and how Fox Chapel Area School District compares to other local school districts. Alicia Gismondi, Director of Federal Programs and Student Achievement, distributed iPads and guided attendees through a STAR 360 assessment at the 8th grade level to provide a hands-on experience of the adaptive assessments taken by students.
The meeting concluded with a moderated question and answer session.
